Federal complaint alleges Big Blue Umbrella CEO misused a homelessness grant for personal expenses
Federal prosecutors charged CEO and executive director Donye Mitchell with wire fraud, alleging that The Big Blue Umbrella obtained more than $1.2 million from Amity Foundation after misrepresenting its housing experience, staffing, spending, and relationship with another service provider. The complaint alleges Mitchell used grant money for inflated salary payments, bail-bond costs, credit-card debt, family transfers, rent, and PlayStation charges. Prosecutors said Mitchell was considered a fugitive when the case was announced.
