Adventist Health reached an $18.5 million settlement over former patients’ sexual-abuse allegations, according to healthcare reporting
Fierce Healthcare reported that Adventist Health agreed to pay $18.5 million to settle a lawsuit brought by former patients who alleged that a physical therapist employed at Adventist Health Sonora sexually abused them during treatment. Seven surviving plaintiffs will divide the settlement. The allegations involved conduct dating back to at least 2007 and claims that the health system failed to act on warnings. A settlement resolves the civil claims but does not by itself establish the allegations as fact.
Status matters. This page records a sourced development, not a completed No Halo investigation. An allegation is not a finding. Dismissals, settlements, judgments, corrections and final outcomes remain distinct.
Donor relevance
Why this matters
The settlement creates a substantial financial obligation and materially advances litigation involving alleged patient-safety and institutional-response failures at a nonprofit health system. Donors may want to assess safeguarding controls, complaint escalation procedures, insurance exposure and any remedial measures adopted after the alleged conduct.
