Advantage Services CEO said the nonprofit furloughed 110 employees after it could not cover a third October payroll

The Salt Lake Tribune, republishing reporting by Fox 13 News, reported that Advantage Services placed 110 employees on a three-week furlough beginning October 12. CEO Robert Ferris said the employment nonprofit could not cover a third October payroll after its largest Salt Lake City contract fell from about $2.165 million to $1 million while insurance and fuel costs increased. Ferris said the organization had 160 employees six months earlier and had already permanently lost 50 positions.

Donor relevance

Why this matters

Advantage Services provides supportive employment to people facing homelessness, disabilities, addiction and criminal-record barriers. The furlough interrupts wages and support for those employees and may reduce cleanup, transportation, kitchen and housing-site services used by other homeless-service providers.

Evidence limits

What remains unverified

No Halo has not independently verified the nonprofit’s cash position, contract terms, insurance increases or employee totals. It has not established whether all furloughed workers will return after three weeks, whether contracted services continued at normal levels or whether bankruptcy or closure remains likely.

Organization response

Ferris said the organization had less work after the city contract reduction and faced insurance increases of more than 300 percent along with higher fuel costs, making it difficult to remain solvent.
