Advantage Services reported furloughing 110 workers amid a financial crisis
FOX 13 reported on October 18 that Advantage Services had placed 110 employees on a three-week furlough beginning October 12 after it could not cover a third October payroll. CEO Robert Ferris said the nonprofit’s largest Salt Lake City contract fell from about $2.165 million to $1 million while insurance costs rose by more than 300%. He said the organization had already lost 50 positions from a workforce of about 160 six months earlier and needed approximately $500,000 to operate through year-end.

Donor relevance
Why this matters
Advantage Services employs people facing homelessness, disabilities, addiction and barriers connected to criminal records while providing cleanup, food-service, transportation and other community services. A prolonged shutdown or failure could simultaneously eliminate supported jobs and interrupt services used by homeless residents and local agencies.
Attribution
Who reported or established this
The furlough, financial estimates and possible closure risk were reported by FOX 13 and attributed principally to CEO Robert Ferris. Salt Lake City confirmed that it reduced the contract after transferring more cleanup work to city employees.
Evidence limits
What remains unverified
No Halo has not independently audited the nonprofit’s cash position, insurance increases or projected $500,000 need. It has not established whether all furloughed workers will return, whether the nonprofit will merge or close, or the precise effect on each contracted service.
Right of reply
Organization response
Ferris said Advantage Services was seeking new contracts, donations, partnerships and a possible merger to preserve jobs and services. He argued that the city’s cost analysis did not fully account for the nonprofit’s employment mission and the social value of its work.
