WIRED reports Center for Humane Technology is cutting about half its non-founder staff in a board-led refocus

WIRED reported nine departures from the technology-policy charity, including Executive Director Julie Guirado, representing about half of its 16 non-founder employees. The organization is winding down in-house policy, litigation, research and related programs to concentrate on founder-led public communication and work with decision-makers. Former employees alleged longstanding internal tensions and taxing management practices; board chair Premal Shah disputed several characterizations.

Status matters. This page records a sourced development, not a completed No Halo investigation. An allegation is not a finding. Dismissals, settlements, judgments, corrections and final outcomes remain distinct.

Donor relevance

Why this matters

The charity is eliminating major program areas, losing senior leadership and substantially reducing staff while concentrating influence around its founders. Donors may need to reassess restricted projects, program continuity and governance concentration.

Attribution

Who reported or established this

The staffing count and internal allegations were reported by WIRED based on former employees. The strategic changes were confirmed in a public statement from the charity's board.

Evidence limits

What remains unverified

No Halo has not independently verified the former employees' descriptions of workplace conditions, the exact employment status of every departing worker, or whether financial pressure contributed to the restructuring. The board described the decision as strategic rather than financial.

Right of reply

Organization response

The board said running both founder-led communications and a full policy institute created persistent tradeoffs. It took responsibility for the transition, named co-founder Randy Fernando interim executive director and promised financial and transition support for departing employees.
