Charlottesville Area Community Foundation leads $7.5 million effort for a permanent low-barrier shelter
WVIR reported that the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation is leading a $7.5 million campaign to renovate the city-owned Holiday Drive property into a permanent, year-round low-barrier shelter. About $4 million was reported as committed. A temporary shelter operated by Central Arizona Shelter Services is already using the first floor, with 80 regular beds and emergency capacity of up to 120. Plans call for added bathrooms, showers, privacy, medical respite, behavioral-health and substance-use services, case management, housing navigation and workforce support. The permanent facility is expected to open in December 2027.

Donor relevance
Why this matters
The project would turn a temporary, fully utilized shelter into permanent regional infrastructure and place multiple health, housing and employment services at one site. Its scale, planned continuity during construction and potential emergency capacity make it a material expansion of homelessness services.
