Delaware State University evaluators reported major health and cost improvements from Catholic Charities USA’s housing initiative
Catholic Charities USA released findings from a five-year Healthy Housing Initiative evaluated by Delaware State University researchers across Detroit, Las Vegas, Portland, Spokane and St. Louis. The evaluation reported that emergency-room visits fell 46% and hospital stays fell 60% after clients had been housed for six months. It also reported that 86% had a primary-care provider, 37% had a behavioral-health provider and reduced acute-care use produced an estimated $4.91 million in savings among 402 surveyed clients.

Donor relevance
Why this matters
The reported reductions substantially exceeded the initiative’s target of cutting emergency-room visits and hospital stays by at least 25%. The findings offer donor-relevant evidence that coordinated housing, health care and case management can improve stability while reducing costly emergency services.
