Independent Sector advances research-based initiative focused on nonprofit-worker economic security

Independent Sector introduced Amy Shields as director of its Center on the Nonprofit and Philanthropic Workforce on October 5. The center is developing workforce standards, organizational self-assessment tools, peer resources and pilot activities in response to joint research indicating that more than one in five nonprofit employees cannot afford basic household necessities.

Status matters. This page records a sourced development, not a completed No Halo investigation. An allegation is not a finding. Dismissals, settlements, judgments, corrections and final outcomes remain distinct.

Donor relevance

Why this matters

Low pay and economic insecurity can undermine staff retention and charities' ability to deliver services. A national effort translating workforce research into standards and practical tools could benefit organizations well beyond Independent Sector's membership.

Attribution

Who reported or established this

Independent Sector reported the leadership appointment and described the center's plans. The economic-security figure was attributed to joint research by Independent Sector and United For ALICE.

Evidence limits

What remains unverified

No Halo has not independently reviewed the underlying worker-level data or established whether the center's proposed standards will be widely adopted. Outcomes from the pilot activities and any effect on compensation, retention or service delivery remain unknown.

Right of reply

Organization response

Independent Sector said the center's work is grounded in research and reviewed by a national advisory board. Shields said the initiative will begin with standards, self-assessment resources and pilots before pursuing broader sector-wide implementation.
