WBRZ reported Central City Autism Awareness made a prohibited campaign contribution that was refunded

Campaign-finance records reviewed by WBRZ showed that Central City Autism Awareness Inc., a 501(c)(3), contributed $1,000 to a candidate for Central police chief. Federal tax rules prohibit 501(c)(3) organizations from making campaign contributions. The candidate said he refunded the money after the issue was raised.

Status matters. This page records a sourced development, not a completed No Halo investigation. An allegation is not a finding. Dismissals, settlements, judgments, corrections and final outcomes remain distinct.

Donor relevance

Why this matters

Even though the amount was limited and refunded, political spending by a public charity can threaten tax-exempt status and indicates a need for stronger board review, payment controls and compliance training.

Attribution

Who reported or established this

WBRZ attributed the contribution to campaign-finance records and interviewed the organization’s president, the candidate and the public official listed as the charity’s treasurer.

Evidence limits

What remains unverified

No Halo has not determined whether the contribution was made with board authorization, whether the refund was completed and recorded, whether regulators will act or whether any other political expenditures occurred.
