Dubuque Rescue Mission plans to replace a thrift store with a 46-bed men's emergency shelter
KCRG reported that the Dubuque Rescue Mission plans to close its downtown thrift store on October 3 and convert the retail floor into an emergency shelter for as many as 46 men nightly. The move would free its existing warming-center space for Opening Doors, which is expected to add 25 beds for women and families, producing up to 50 additional beds across the two organizations.

Donor relevance
Why this matters
The planned conversion would materially increase cold-weather shelter capacity after local providers reportedly turned people away the previous winter. It also trades away a retail fundraising operation and depends on construction, regulatory clearance and new operating support.
Attribution
Who reported or established this
KCRG reporter Duane Vetter reported the plan and quoted Dubuque Rescue Mission Executive Director Samuel Felderman. Demand information was attributed to the mission and Community Solutions of Eastern Iowa.
Evidence limits
What remains unverified
No Halo has not established that code and zoning requirements have been satisfied, that construction will finish before winter, that the requested $200,000 will be raised or that all projected beds will be staffed and placed into service.
Right of reply
Organization response
The mission said the new space must be secure, comfortable and safe and is seeking $200,000 for construction, beds and operations. It said men's clothing and bedding donations will continue at its Main Street building while women's and children's clothing is redirected to partner sites.
