Heritage Behavioral Health permanently closes its Oasis day and resource program

Heritage Behavioral Health Center announced on October 8 that its Oasis Day and Resource Center in Decatur was permanently closing after operations had been suspended on September 24. Oasis provided showers, laundry, mail access, referrals and daytime shelter for people experiencing homelessness. Heritage said it would redirect staff capacity and resources toward behavioral-health needs and ask other community organizations to help replace services.

Status matters. This page records a sourced development, not a completed No Halo investigation. An allegation is not a finding. Dismissals, settlements, judgments, corrections and final outcomes remain distinct.

Donor relevance

Why this matters

The permanent closure removes a local access point for basic services, with reported gaps remaining for lockers, laundry and showers. Donors should note the material program change and how restricted or earmarked Oasis funding is ultimately handled.

Attribution

Who reported or established this

WAND reported the permanent closure and quoted Heritage president and CEO Mary Garrison regarding the decision, available replacement services and the treatment of funding earmarked for Oasis.

Evidence limits

What remains unverified

No Halo has not independently established how much funding was assigned to Oasis, whether funders will redirect or recover those funds, or whether partner organizations can fully replace the closed services. No Halo also has not audited Heritage's broader financial condition.

Right of reply

Organization response

Garrison said the closure was not caused by financial hardship. She described it as a stewardship decision to focus Heritage's expertise, workforce and resources on growing behavioral-health needs. Heritage said community partners were helping connect clients with services, while acknowledging that some Oasis functions did not yet have complete replacements.
