Heritage Behavioral Health Center permanently closed its Oasis day-resource program
Heritage Behavioral Health Center announced on October 8 that its Oasis Day and Resource Center in Decatur would close permanently after services had been suspended since September 24. Oasis provided showers, laundry, mail access, referrals, lockers and daytime shelter for people experiencing homelessness. WAND reported that some services, including lockers and established laundry access, did not yet have full local replacements.

Donor relevance
Why this matters
The permanent closure removes a central access point for basic hygiene, mail, storage, referrals and daytime safety. These services can directly affect employment, housing applications and continuity of care for people experiencing homelessness.

Who reported or established this
Heritage CEO Mary Garrison announced and explained the closure. WAND documented concerns raised by residents and reported on service gaps identified during the announcement.
Evidence limits
What remains unverified
No Halo has not established how many people will lose access, whether partner organizations will replace every Oasis service, what will happen to funding previously designated for Oasis, or the longer-term effects on beneficiaries and emergency systems.
Right of reply
Organization response
Heritage said the closure was not caused by financial hardship. Garrison said the organization was redirecting expertise, staff and resources toward growing mental-health needs and would refer Oasis users to partner agencies. Heritage planned a 30-day period for people to retrieve mail and locker contents and obtain referrals.
