Heritage Behavioral Health Center permanently closes its Oasis day center, leaving some services without immediate replacements

WAND reported that Heritage permanently closed the Oasis Day and Resource Center in Decatur after suspending operations on September 24. Oasis provided showers, laundry, mail access, lockers, referrals and daytime shelter to people experiencing homelessness. Heritage said other organizations would help absorb demand, but its chief executive acknowledged that no local provider was then offering lockers and that shower and laundry arrangements were temporary or still being developed.

Status matters. This page records a sourced development, not a completed No Halo investigation. An allegation is not a finding. Dismissals, settlements, judgments, corrections and final outcomes remain distinct.

Donor relevance

Why this matters

The closure ends a low-barrier daytime service used for hygiene, mail, storage and referrals. Those services can materially affect whether unhoused people can maintain employment, receive documents and connect with housing or treatment, and the reporting identified immediate gaps in replacement capacity.

Attribution

Who reported or established this

WAND reported the permanent closure and quoted Heritage CEO Mary Garrison, a local resident who used the center and community members responding to the interruption.

Evidence limits

What remains unverified

No Halo has not independently assessed the capacity or accessibility of replacement providers, established how many people were using Oasis, reviewed the decision-making records, or determined where money previously designated for the program will ultimately go.

Right of reply

Organization response

Heritage said the closure was not caused by financial hardship but by a decision to focus staff, expertise and resources on mental-health and substance-use services amid rising need. It cited partnerships with other agencies, acknowledged gaps involving lockers, showers and laundry, and said Oasis would provide mail, locker-clearance and referral help for 30 days.
