American Library Association reports 4,235 unique book titles challenged in 2025
During Banned Books Week, the American Library Association published figures from its Office for Intellectual Freedom documenting 4,235 unique titles challenged in libraries during 2025, the second-highest annual total it has recorded. ALA also reported 713 censorship attempts and said 92% were initiated by pressure groups, government officials or other decision-makers.
Status matters. This page records a sourced development, not a completed No Halo investigation. An allegation is not a finding. Dismissals, settlements, judgments, corrections and final outcomes remain distinct.
Donor relevance
Why this matters
Systematic documentation of challenges provides libraries, policymakers, researchers and donors with national evidence about efforts to restrict access to books. Maintaining this dataset is a notable public-information function even though the figures describe an adverse trend.
Attribution
Who reported or established this
The American Library Association's American Libraries Magazine reported figures compiled by ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom.
Evidence limits
What remains unverified
No Halo has not audited the underlying incident reports or determined how many challenges went unreported. The publication does not establish the eventual disposition of every challenge or the extent to which ALA's advocacy changed access outcomes.
Right of reply
Organization response
ALA presented the data as part of Banned Books Week and its continuing effort to track and publicize library-censorship activity. No separate response to the newly published figures was located in the consulted material.
