Abundant Blessings executive director agreed to plead guilty in homelessness-funding scheme, according to prosecutors

The U.S. Attorney’s Office reported that Abundant Blessings executive director Alexander Soofer signed a plea agreement covering wire fraud and money laundering. According to prosecutors, Soofer admitted obtaining $23 million in public homelessness funding, receiving at least some of it through fraud, and keeping at least $2 million for personal enrichment and businesses unrelated to homeless housing. He also admitted participating in a referral and kickback scheme involving an employee of another homelessness nonprofit.

Donor relevance

Why this matters

An executive’s admissions concerning restricted public funds, kickbacks, fabricated participants, and personal enrichment are significant governance and financial-control signals for donors and government funders.
