Institute for Nonprofit News reported 23 rapid grants for newsrooms covering U.S. fires and floods

The Institute for Nonprofit News said it and the Google News Initiative awarded 23 independent newsrooms unrestricted grants of $10,000 each after August wildfires, floods and severe storms. Recipients included newsrooms in Indiana, Illinois, Washington and Nevada. One recipient reported that its newsroom and office were flooded while staff continued covering the disaster and recovery.

Status matters. This page records a sourced development, not a completed No Halo investigation. An allegation is not a finding. Dismissals, settlements, judgments, corrections and final outcomes remain distinct.

Donor relevance

Why this matters

The $230,000 response supported local information infrastructure during emergencies, including newsrooms that were themselves physically affected. Unrestricted rapid funding can help preserve access to verified safety and recovery information when local reporting capacity is most vulnerable.

Attribution

Who reported or established this

The Institute for Nonprofit News reported the awards; Western Wayne News publisher Chris Hardie described the flooding's effect on his newsroom and the grant's expected benefit.

Evidence limits

What remains unverified

No Halo has not independently confirmed receipt or expenditure of every grant, evaluated the resulting journalism, or established how much coverage would have been lost without the funding.

Right of reply

Organization response

INN said the program was designed to sustain independent local coverage of natural disasters and was open to qualifying newsrooms in affected areas, not only INN members.
