AP reports CORE is closing or transferring Los Angeles fire-recovery cases as government funding remains unresolved
The Associated Press reported that roughly 1,400 households served by five nonprofits could lose disaster case managers by the end of October because of a funding dispute between California and FEMA. CORE, which was managing about 450 cases, had closed some less severe cases and was attempting to transfer 200 clients to other nonprofits.

Donor relevance
Why this matters
Case managers help fire survivors navigate rebuilding, benefits, housing and financial assistance. Losing that support could disrupt recovery for households still dealing with complex claims and unmet needs.

What remains unverified
No Halo has not established whether the funding dispute will be resolved before services end, how many CORE transfers have been completed, or what support each affected household will retain.
Right of reply
Organization response
CORE disaster recovery manager Matt Gsell said recovery systems are difficult for survivors to navigate and warned that responsibility cannot simply be shifted onto local nonprofits. CORE reported closing some lower-severity cases and seeking new providers for about 200 clients.
