Former North American Telugu Association president pleaded guilty in matching-gift fraud case, DOJ announced
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California announced that former North American Telugu Association president Raghava Reddy Ghosala pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to defraud the United States. According to DOJ, Ghosala admitted that, while he led the association from 2019 through 2022, it obtained millions of dollars from corporate matching-gift programs for donations that did not qualify, commonly because the purported donations were refunded. He also admitted working with others to falsify the association’s 2019 through 2021 tax returns by classifying donor reimbursements as legitimate expenses. Sentencing is scheduled for February 22, 2027.

Donor relevance
Why this matters
The admitted conduct involved millions of dollars in employer-funded charitable matches and false nonprofit tax reporting. It raises serious questions about historical financial controls, donor transactions and board oversight at an under-covered community organization.
