Officials say Collingswood arts nonprofit may lose control of Scottish Rite Theater amid financial strain

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Camden County and Collingswood officials are discussing a transfer of the Scottish Rite Theater lease that would end the Collingswood Foundation for the Arts’ management role and install a new nonprofit operator. Officials said a post-pandemic decline in sales and changing wedding demand left the foundation unable to repay borough operating advances. The newspaper also reported that the foundation had lost federal tax-exempt status after five years without required filings and had not been reinstated as of October 14.

Donor relevance

Why this matters

The proposed transition could effectively end the nonprofit’s principal operating role, affect employees and change control of a major regional cultural venue. The reported inability to repay public advances and loss of tax-exempt status raise additional governance and donor-protection concerns.

Who reported or established this

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported the financial and operational issues based on statements from Camden County and Collingswood officials, public meetings and its review of the foundation’s federal filing status.

Evidence limits

What remains unverified

No Halo has not established that a lease transfer will occur, identified the proposed replacement nonprofit or independently determined the foundation’s complete current assets, liabilities and obligations to the borough.

Right of reply

Organization response

Executive director Paula Lara did not respond to the newspaper. Former Collingswood mayor Jim Maley said the filing lapse was a mistake and that documents had since been submitted. He also said the foundation could not simply disappear because it holds the venue’s concessionaire permit.
