House of Mercy says storage loss has sharply reduced its household-startup assistance

Potomac Local reported that House of Mercy closed about one-third of its thrift-store sales floor after losing approximately 75 pallet spaces of storage. Executive Director Jessica Root said furniture donations largely stopped and the Foundations of Mercy program, which supplies household basics to people recovering from homelessness, incarceration or fires, was mostly halted or sharply reduced. The storage shortage is also complicating a Christmas program that served about 1,300 children last year.

Donor relevance

Why this matters

The space loss is affecting direct aid to households starting over and is reducing thrift-store revenue that helps support operations. House of Mercy says it needs $350,000 to lease and equip additional space and had secured about $100,000 in cash and pledges when the story was published.

What remains unverified

No Halo has not independently verified the estimated storage loss, revenue declines, campaign costs, number of affected households or the extent to which alternative assistance remains available.

Right of reply

Organization response

House of Mercy said it complied with fire-marshal and zoning requirements, could not identify a workable storage alternative with the county, and is raising money for adjacent space. Root said the Christmas program will proceed using temporary off-site storage but will operate differently.
