Mighty Writers reports partial reopening after furlough, while Philadelphia layoffs and location losses continue
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Mighty Writers restored its two Camden locations after receiving a $563,000 restricted grant, recalled six full-time Camden employees and restarted several literacy and food-distribution programs. The organization remains in a broader furlough that initially affected 26 employees. Eleven workers have returned, six await recall, three resigned and six were laid off. Four Philadelphia layoffs followed the Philadelphia Housing Authority’s decision to pause its partnership, and most of the charity’s Philadelphia sites need new locations before services can fully resume.

Donor relevance
Why this matters
The grant and staff recalls are meaningful corrective developments after a major service interruption. However, restricted funding cannot resolve all of the organization’s Philadelphia challenges, and continued furloughs, layoffs and facility losses remain material to donors and families.

What remains unverified
No Halo has not established Mighty Writers’ current unrestricted cash balance, the causes of the broader financial instability, whether all furloughed employees will return or when affected Philadelphia locations will reopen.
