Catholic Charities Maine expands northern Maine frozen-food capacity roughly fivefold

Catholic Charities Maine completed a large freezer in Monticello capable of holding up to 320,000 pounds of food, approximately five times its previous frozen-storage capacity. WAGM reported that the project cost more than $400,000 and was supported through donations and fundraising. Charity leaders said the freezer would let the food bank accept larger protein donations and distribute them to pantries in quantities those pantries could store.

Donor relevance

Why this matters

Cold-storage limits can prevent food banks from accepting large donations of meat and other protein. The completed project materially increases the charity’s ability to receive, hold and distribute such food across northern Maine.

Attribution

Who reported or established this

WAGM reported the completed project and interviewed Catholic Charities Maine CEO Steve Letourneau and Hunger and Relief Services Director Jon Blanchard.

Evidence limits

What remains unverified

No Halo has not independently verified construction costs, final usable capacity, future operating expenses, the volume of additional food the freezer will produce or how distribution gains will be measured.

Right of reply

Organization response

Catholic Charities Maine said the larger freezer would allow it to accept donations from a broader area, store more protein and divide shipments into amounts that local pantries could safely handle.
